Burst your Information Bubble!

If you’re in one you’re ‘in a difficult situation, and very likely to fail’!

Reinforcement bubbles can lead us to overestimate the prevalence of our perspective, and inhibits authentic dialogue. Rose Wong

Recently we uploaded a grant request to our i3D Rapid Platform on Bursting the Information Bubble that we all fall prey to! The company raising a grant wants to create an algorithm to counter the algorithms creating these bubbles.

It is such an interesting concept that it is worthy of a somewhat deeper dive.

Here’s what 4 simple scrapings of the main culprit (the internet) revealed:

1. A filter bubble or ideological frame is a state of intellectual isolation (assuming we have a decent intellect), that can result from personalized searches when a website algorithm selectively guesses what information a user would like to see based on information about the user, such as location, past click-behaviour, and search history

2. A situation in which an internet user encounters only information and opinions that conform to and reinforce their own beliefs, especially one caused by algorithms that personalize an individual’s online experience.

3. Social media algorithms filter out reality — not to be underestimated — the social media “filter bubble,” is a term coined by internet activist Eli Pariser. In his viral TED Talk, he defined this echo chamber as a “personal, unique universe of information that you live in online.

4. Filter bubbles create an informational barrier around people that prevents them from seeing opposing viewpoints giving the “impression that our narrow self-interest is all that exists” (Pariser, 3:02). Because of this, that person can become polarized to their side of a particular argument

Key takeaway from this:

Your intellectual isolation is selectively caused by algorithms in which you encounter only information and opinions that conform to and reinforce your own beliefs, preventing you from seeing opposing viewpoints, giving the impression that ‘our narrow self-interest is all that exists’

This causes a polarisation leading to conflict in the societies in which we live.

What are we doing about this?

At the i3D Protocol we look for interesting companies including ones trying to stop erroneous reinforcement of ideas. Our own algorithms are designed to ensure that one grouping can’t sway an analysis of a company due to bias or ego.
